SME Restoration
Please note: after updating the vehicle to software level 25-11, the SME unit cannot be restored.
The Smart Module Electronics (SME) controls and coordinates the energy flow to the high-voltage lithium-ion battery. It also monitors the battery condition and key operating parameters.
In the event of an accident on BMW i-series vehicles, the safety system is triggered and three pyrotechnic elements inside the SME unit, located in the battery, are activated. A CRASH fault is stored in the processor memory. After that, the vehicle cannot move and a protection system message appears on the display.
Possible solutions:
- Buy a new SME unit, approximately 1300 EUR, remove the battery, install the new unit and program it to the vehicle. Total costs can reach about $2000.
- Remove the battery, take out the SME unit and send it to us for restoration.
Before removing the battery, contact us for preliminary diagnostics.
What we do:
- Perform software restoration of the SME unit.
- Replace all pyrotechnic elements with new ones. Detailed video is available on our YouTube channel.
- Send the restored unit back to you.
- After receiving the restored SME, one more pyrotechnic element in the front part of the battery must also be replaced. We include it in your shipment.
- After the battery is installed back into the vehicle, we connect remotely, code the SME unit and perform the final check.
What you get:
- A restored SME unit with new pyrotechnic elements, functionally equivalent to a new unit.
- Significant cost savings.
